New study: A healthy lifestyle is key to preventing type 2 diabetes

Healthy eating, weight loss, behaviour change and exercise is key to reducing the risk of type 2 diabetes - according to new research involving the University of Nottingham's experts. Type 2 diabetes is one of the fastest growing chronic diseases worldwide - due to the increases in the number of inactive people becoming overweight or obese.

As part of the largest study of its kind, experts from around the world, set up the PREVIEW Project (PREVention of diabetes through lifestyle intervention and population studies in Europe around the World).

The aim of the study was to find out what the most effective lifestyle (including diet and physical exercise), was to prevent type 2 diabetes in those who are at risk of developing the disease. Parkrun Practice Research Article Published

Since parkrun's partnership with the Royal College of General Practitioners back in 2018, over 1,500 practices have partnered with their local parkrun to become a parkrun practice. Findings from the GP practice part of the study were published; the study investigate the links between parkrun events and GP practices in order to understand why and how parkrun events establish those connections, and associated experiences with doing so. The purpose was to provide practical recommendations for developing the parkrun practice initiative and similar collaborations between primary care and voluntary organisations like parkrun.

Encouragingly, over two-thirds (70%) of the event teams were knowingly linked with one or more GP practices; and this was generally viewed as having been a positive experience. They reported being motivated by wanting to positively impact the health and wellbeing of their community and improve links between parkrun and the healthcare sector.
