What is musculoskeletal health?
Musculoskeletal (MSK) health refers to the health of the bones, joints, muscles and spine. MSK conditions are a group of conditions that affect one or more of these parts of the body. There are three main groups of MSK conditions, all of which can be a common cause of severe long term pain and physical disability:
- Inflammatory conditions e.g. rheumatoid arthritis
- Conditions of MSK pain e.g. osteoarthritis and back pain
- Osteoporosis and fragility fractures e.g. a fracture after a fall from standing height
There are lots of steps that we can all take to maintain healthy lives and reduce the risk of developing MSK conditions. One of these is keeping physically active.
Many people who live with an MSK condition often think that physical activity will make their condition worse. However, there is lots of evidence that physical activity can actually significantly benefit MSK conditions and the symptoms that people experience.
